There are 7 Principles of Design: Contrast, Emphasis, Pattern, Balance, Proportion or Scale, Harmony and Rhythm/Movement.
This week’s blog is about Contrast. Contrast is the juxtaposition of different elements of design such as rough and smooth textures, dark and light- in order to highlight their differences to create visual interest or a focal point.
A picture really is worth a 1000 words so peek through at examples of designing with contrast in mind…. take a look!
Warm brown flooring, contrasting white seating and a rich blue wall in this room create impact. The room is made to feel longer with the anchor color of blue and the start white highlights the flooring.
A bold pattern rug contrasts with the rough wood on the feature wall. The 2 equally balanced chairs add the perfect contrast of style to make this room feel pulled together not a mish mash of styles
Simple Black and White mirrors and hard ware contrast the soft grey and whites in this bathroom.
The matte finish of the wall color and the plush velvet blanked add contrast in texture.
What would be a cold modern room with concrete is made to feel natural with the greenery paneled walls and potted plants
This contemporary living room has a contrast in scale- a large sectional, small legs on the long low table and an Eames style chair from a different era- it works because each item is in a neutral color. Contrast in scale vs contrast in colors.
Simple piping on this table cloth elevates what could be a simple tablecloth to an elegant textile.
Black and White- always a classic, here it is brought to the sink and window frames too.
A smooth sleek tile on the wall is contrasted with a shaggy rug on the floor, making this room welcoming and warm
Aged exposed brick meets a plush groovy velvet sofa adding real style to this room. Brick walls with velvet thrown around a room is always a great mix
Color and pattern contrast!
